[ last updated: april 2026 ]
Tom Barrett is your congressman. He is paid to represent the people of Ingham, Clinton, Shiawassee, Livingston, Eaton, Oakland, and Genesee counties. His job is to show up, take questions, and be accountable. He is not doing his job.

>> THE VOTING RECORD
| SNAP CUTS | Voted yes on a budget bill containing the largest cuts to food assistance in American history. More than 20,000 people in MI-07 are at risk of losing SNAP benefits. 1.5 million Michiganders affected statewide. |
| MEDICAID | Voted to cut $880 billion from Medicaid. An estimated 23,000 people in MI-07 are projected to lose health coverage in 2026. Three major insurers — HAP CareSource, Molina Healthcare, and Physicians Health Plan — are already exiting Michigan's ACA marketplace, forcing 200,000 residents to find new plans. |
| TARIFFS | Voted against a resolution to terminate emergency tariffs on Canada. The tariffs raise costs for families, small businesses, and supply chains across the district. |
| VOTER DATA | Signed a letter urging Michigan's Secretary of State to hand voter registration data to the Justice Department in connection with Detroit ballots — in a state where officials found 15 instances of voter fraud out of 5.7 million votes cast in 2024. |
| WAR POWERS | Voted against a bipartisan resolution to require congressional authorization before military action against Iran. Later introduced a softer version with a 5-year sunset — after the damage was done. (Detroit News, April 22, 2026) |
>> WHAT HE HAS NOT ADDRESSED
- Federal cuts eliminating university research programs that have run for decades — including summer research positions that students in this district depended on. First cancellations in program history.
- Three major health insurers leaving Michigan's ACA marketplace in 2026 — HAP CareSource, Molina Healthcare, Physicians Health Plan — leaving 200,000 residents to scramble for new coverage.
- An estimated 20,000 hospital jobs at risk in Michigan and a projected $4.9 billion loss to the state economy from Medicaid cuts.
- ACA premiums up 20% in 2026 for people in Michigan's individual market — on top of everything else.
- Unelected officials rewriting federal spending and agency policy outside the normal congressional process — while Barrett says nothing.
>> WHAT HE CALLED "VANDALISM"
Sidewalk chalk.
In October 2025, a food drive and vigil were held outside Barrett's Lansing office to protest the SNAP cuts he voted for. Constituents left messages on the sidewalk in chalk. Barrett characterized it as vandalism.
He voted to cut food assistance from more than 20,000 of his own constituents.
He called their chalk messages the problem.
